For over six years, Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) has offered a free transportation service to provide individuals with transportation or mobility restrictions a safe, reliable way to get to the hospital or other DCMH appointments. DCMH recently added a second bus to expand the service’s reach and increase access to help ensure patients can attend appointments at times that work best for them.
The addition of a second transportation bus has significantly expanded access to care for patients across Decatur County, including patients residing in Burney, Clarksburg, Millhousen, New Point, St. Paul, and Westport. After providing 8,199 rides in 2025, the program averaged more than 810 rides per month during the first half of 2026, reflecting growing demand and DCMH’s commitment to reducing transportation barriers and connecting patients with the care they need. Patients who routinely use the bus commend the team for their supportive, friendly, and professional service, and many develop meaningful relationships with the drivers and fellow riders along the way.
Transportation is a need the community has clearly identified. DCMH’s 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment found that residents see transportation as a barrier to community well-being and expressed a 3.75 out of 5 need for improved access to affordable transportation. This service is one way DCMH responds directly to a need identified by the community.
To help ensure this service continues to grow, the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County also launched its Driving Health Forward campaign, with a goal of raising $100,000 to provide rides to care, pharmacy delivery, and transportation to programs that support health and wellness.
Transportation plays a fundamental role in helping people receive the medical care they need. Reliable transportation is especially important for those managing chronic conditions, illness, and disease, as its absence can create a barrier to needed care and services. By providing dependable transportation, DCMH helps patients attend appointments, obtain medications, and access important health services without the added stress of finding a ride.

In addition to providing transportation for DCMH patients, the program reflects a strong partnership between DCMH, the Community Healthcare Clinic of Decatur County, and the Decatur County Health Department. Through this collaborative approach, the organizations are working together to connect more residents with the healthcare services and resources they need.
Decatur County residents who need transportation to the hospital or a DCMH appointment can call 812-663-1164 at least 24 hours before their appointment to coordinate a ride. The transportation buses are wheelchair accessible and can accommodate individuals with mobility concerns. Through continued investment in innovative solutions like its transportation program, DCMH remains committed to reducing barriers to care and helping community members access the services they need to live healthier lives.
