Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) is proud to announce the success of its recent community flu vaccination efforts, providing flu vaccinations to community members and local employees to help protect against seasonal illness.

Over the past month, the DCMH team hosted two drive-thru flu vaccine clinics at the hospital, held a clinic for members of the Decatur County Family YMCA, and provided vaccinations at Westport Family Fun Day and the Men’s Health Tailgate. Additionally, the DCMH Work Well Occupational Health team visited many local businesses to administer vaccines on-site, making it easier for employees to prioritize their health during flu season.

These efforts represent the work of team members across multiple departments and roles, all coming together to make preventive care more accessible to the community.

“Our community showed how much it values protecting one another through the flu vaccinations administered this season,” said Amanda Sherwood, DCMH Infection Prevention Coordinator. “Every vaccination represents an opportunity to help prevent illness, protect those at greater risk, and keep our families, neighbors, and community healthier.”

The flu vaccine is recommended for most individuals six months of age and older and helps reduce the risk of contracting and spreading influenza. Adults 65 and older are encouraged to receive the high-dose flu vaccine, which is designed to produce a stronger immune response and provide additional protection against severe illness and complications. Each year’s vaccine is formulated to protect against the influenza strains expected to be most common during the season.

Vaccination plays an important role in reducing the spread of illness and protecting those who may be more vulnerable to serious complications, including older adults, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Those who have not yet received their flu vaccine can schedule an appointment with a DCMH Family Medicine provider by calling 812-222-DOCS (3627). Businesses and organizations interested in providing flu vaccinations or other occupational health services for their employees can contact DCMH Work Well Occupational Health at 812-662-6450.
