Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) is proud to be the first in the region to offer technology designed to support precision during hip replacement surgery: OrthoGrid Hip AI®.
Advanced Technology. Same Trusted Surgeon.
At the center of this advancement is Dr. Eric Tannenbaum, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and Medical Director of Orthopedics at DCMH. Known for his advanced training in hip preservation and joint replacement, Dr. Tannenbaum has built his practice around minimally invasive techniques designed to reduce pain, improve recovery, and restore mobility for his patients.
After completing his orthopedic residency at the University of Michigan, Dr. Tannenbaum pursued additional fellowship training in Los Angeles at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute, where he refined advanced hip replacement techniques under nationally recognized orthopedic surgeons. His work reflects a continued focus on improving surgical precision and expanding treatment options for patients with hip conditions ranging from arthritis to complex structural injury.
The addition of OrthoGrid Hip AI® reflects DCMH’s commitment to empowering its team with advanced tools that support ongoing improvements in patient experience.
The technology provides real-time guidance during anterior hip replacement procedures to support implant positioning based on each patient’s unique anatomy without requiring additional incisions or implanted hardware. Unlike other guidance systems, it is fully surgeon-operated, allowing Dr. Tannenbaum to maintain complete oversight and control throughout the procedure while integrating the tool into his established surgical technique.
“Technology should support the surgeon,” said Dr. Tannenbaum. “This tool gives me additional information during surgery that can help support precision while allowing me to continue applying the training, experience, and judgment that every patient deserves.”
Anterior hip replacement itself has changed the experience of hip surgery for many patients. Compared to traditional approaches, it allows surgeons to access the joint from the front of the hip and work between muscle planes rather than cutting through muscle, which can support a less invasive recovery.
“Dr. Tannenbaum provides excellent care and has brought advanced training and specialized expertise to our orthopedic program since joining DCMH,” said Rex McKinney, President and CEO of Decatur County Memorial Hospital. “Adding technology like this builds on that foundation and helps ensure patients have access to leading-edge orthopedic care close to home.”
As orthopedic care continues to evolve, DCMH remains focused on ensuring patients in the region have access to advanced surgical options without needing to travel outside the community.
Renee Muckerheide, DCMH Surgery Director, said, “Introducing this new technology is about helping people receive the care they need without ever having to leave the community we all call home.”
