At the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County, we believe that the health of our caregivers is just as important as the care they provide every day. That belief recently came to life through a series of free employee wellness screening events at Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH), made possible thanks to the generosity of our donors and the collaborative spirit of the DCMH Rewards & Recognition Committee and Human Resources team.

Throughout July, 291 employees took part in these seven exclusive wellness events, where 1,746 free screenings were provided. From nurses and technicians to dietary staff, environmental services, and administrative team members, employees across the organization showed up for their health and for each other.

“These screenings are about more than lab work; they’re a message to every team member: You matter,” said Mandy Lohrum, Director of the Hospital Foundation of Decatur County. “When donors give, they’re making a real impact on the lives of the people who care for our community.”

DCMH has long offered free screenings and health events for the public. But these employee-focused screenings were designed intentionally to ensure that caregivers have access to the same kind of preventive care they so often provide to others. By removing cost barriers and creating a safe, supportive environment, these events honored the hospital’s mission to care deeply for its own.

“Our employees give so much of themselves,” said Billi Bruner, HR Director and Rewards & Recognition Committee lead. “Offering these screenings is one way we can give back, and let them know we see them, appreciate them, and want them to stay healthy.”

President and CEO Rex McKinney echoed that sentiment. “We work to promote health and wellness across our entire community, and that starts with supporting our own team. When our employees are cared for, they’re equipped to care for others.”

Thanks to the support of our community and the donors who give to the Hospital Foundation’s Community Impact Fund, screenings like these are possible, not just for our employees, but also for the broader public at events like the Women’s Health Expo, community Healthy Fair, and Men’s Health Tailgate.
